Swim Team Party August 8th

Hello Jets!

Wednesday evening is the Swim Team Banquet and Pool Party. The party starts at 5:30. Bring your whole family! It will be fun for all.

Everyone is asked to bring two food dishes: a main dish or salad or dessert to share. Also, please bring your favorite drink (2 L pop, tea, lemonaide, etc). The team will provide paper plates, bowls, cups, utensils, napkins and ice. After the meal, there will be a short awards ceremony and a quick business meeting, then the pool party will start.

If you can't attend, please ask someone you know to pick up your swimmers stuff - I have lots of ribbons and medals from the Association Meet, and there will be some special awards given out. Alternatively you can drop me an email and let me know how you would like to get your swimmers stuff if you can't make it.

Hope to see you all there!

The Association Meet is ON

Hello,

Saturday July 28th is our Association Meet to be hosted by the Concord C-Lions in Athens, WV. This will be an excellent meet this year.

Please plan to arrive at the Concord pool by 8:30 at the latest to get set up. There is PLENTY of parking all around. Concord will designate an area for us to set up in, so watch for this when you arrive. Our warm ups are at 9:10-9:20 and the meet starts at 10:00. I have a coaches meeting at 8:30, so I won't be available for you until right before warm ups. I will arrive at the Concord pool around 8 am so you can catch me before 8:30 if you like. I will be by the pool most of the day, so you can find me there anytime you need me. I will try to make rounds through the set up area when I can just to make sure everybody is okay.

It is very important that we stay together as a team on Saturday. We have to help each other listen for when our events are called, and help find swimmers when they are late getting to the clerk. Of course you can move around and spend time by the pool cheering. Just be sure to circulate through the main Giles area now and then to make sure you know what is going on.

If you have a pup-tent or a larger stand-up sun-shade that you are willing to bring share, that would be fantastic. The forecast is for cloudy skies and a 60% chance of precip. and maybe storms. So having shelter is a good thing. You may want to bring a water proof ground cover to sit on or put your tent on. This will help. Anticipate being chilly and damp - so lots of dry towels, sweatshirts, pants, etc. And several pairs too so when one gets wet you can swap out. Remember this thing goes all day, so you will need to prepare for the long haul. I don't know how they handle storm delays - there can be no make up meet, so my guess they will try to keep going as best they can unless it gets impossible to continue. Lets hope for the best!

After the meet, there will be an awards ceremony where they announce the winner and award trophies There are some special awards for retiring swimmers and high point scorers. I will collect all the medals and ribbons and we will give them out at the swim team party on Aug 8th.

Come ready to swim - let's win this thing! Go JETS!

VICTORY OVER TAZEWELL

Congratulations to the Giles Jets Swim team for their impressive 352 to 292 victory over the Tazewell Torpedoes. Long time swim team parents agree that it has been at least 6 years since Giles has beaten Tazewell. Tazewell brought most of their team - and most of their best swimmers - to our pool for the meet. Nevertheless, our swimmers did a fantastic job, and our win was very much deserved. Thanks to all the swimmers that toughed it out in the cold rain and gave their very best effort. And double thanks to all the parents who stuck it out and let their kids keep going to the very end! We could not have done this with out you!

WAY TO GO JETS!

The Tazewell Meet is ON

Hello,

It looks like the huge rain system is moving out of our area, which is good news for our meet tonight. Remember, we swim in the rain, but thunder and/or lightning will cause delays if storms pop up later.

Please come if you have signed up to swim. We need everyone to participate. If rain shuts us down, then so be it. But lets do what we can.

Please arrive at 4:30 to get set up and get your events. Remember to help your swimmer make good food choices today and drink lots of water. It may be cloudy and cool, but it is still important to be fully hydrated.

See you in a while!

Jim

Final Week of Practice

Hello:

UPDATE: Storms are brewing in our area. It is unclear whether they will affect practice tonight. I will send a message out as soon as possible if practice needs to be cancelled. For now, assume the best!

This is our final week of Swim practice. Everybody will practice from 7-8 pm on Mon, Wed and Friday. Tuesday is our meet against Tazewell here, and Thursday there is no meet and no practice (the pool has make up swim lessons that will block us).

Please make every attempt to come to practice this week - especially Friday. We will be working on good starts, fast turns, solid finishes - and most important, relay starts. It may be crowded, but we can have a good time. Watch email and/or the blog (www.gilesjets.blogspot.com) for weather updates as needed.

Tomorrow for our meet against Tazewell, plan to arrive at 4:30 to get your events and get set up. This one will be HOT. Tazewell has a large number of swimmers - many very good - that will be coming. We have more. Remember, we almost beat them in their pool. Let's beat them here at home!

Saturday is the Association Meet at Concord in Athens, WV. I will post directions again and give you information about the meet later this week.

Thanks, Jim

The Concord Meet is ON

Hello,

UPDATE: There are a large number of widely scattered storms in our area and to our west. There is no way to know which, if any, will affect our meet tonight.

PLEASE COME TO THE MEET REGARDLESS OF THE WEATHER...if there are delays, we will get through them as best we can. If the storms get bad enough to call off the meet, we will do this. Safety is the #1 concern at all times.

We can't win the meet if folks decide to stay home and the meet goes on as scheduled.

*****

We are going to have a very exciting meet tonight! Concord is coming to town, and they are bringing a lot of great swimmers. However, we have great swimmers too, and we will have a lot more folks in the water than they will. It is OUR pool, so we have the advantage. It is my hope that we will overwhelm them and win this meet outright.

Please remind your swimmer(s) to drink lots of water or clear liquid today. NO SODA! Ask them to rest and stay out of the sun during the hot afternoon hours. Food should be good carbs like pasta, fruit and veggies. Please limit fat and refined sugars. This will help each swimmer do their best tonight.

Please encourage your swimmer(s) to cheer for thier teammates tonight. Lots of noise and lots of excitement will help everyone do their best. In several of our recent meets, a good number of swimmers have dropped SECONDS off thier best times. If we can do this tonight, the close races will be victories for us. Having everyone really excited will be the best way to make this happen.

Thanks for all your support. Go Jets!

Jim

Practice Schedule for July 16th - July 27th

Hello,

Of the 5 days we need Castle Rock, only 2 are available for us to practice. This, plus a variety of other variables make Castle Rock not the best solution for our practice woes over the next two weeks.

So: Monday (7/16) we will practice at the normal time 7-9 pm. Every other day for the rest of the season, we will practice at 7-8 pm at Pearisburg. EVERYONE is invited. Please note there is no meet on Thursday July 26th so we will have practice that day.

We will conduct stroke pratice in the deep end for those that need it and more regular workouts in the main pool. I will have lane assignments for all swimmers during this time.

Thanks for your patience. Jim

Important Notes for the Rest of the Season

Hello: Lots to tell you...this is long (sorry), but please note each item

1. Giles @ Richlands Meet Tuesday (7/17): I will send out directions for Richlands later today. Plan to arrive at 4:30 to get your events and get set up. I will have the entries posted at practice Monday.

2. There are two home meets left: Concord on Thursday (7/19) and Tazewell on Tuesday (7/24). Let's win these meets! We need PARENTS to sign up for concessions and for meet duties for both remaining meets ASAP. Please see Melissa or Joyce at practice for this. Remember, selling concessions is a great money maker for the team and we have two shots left.

3. Association Meet - Concord July 28th. Plan to arrive at Concord at 8:30 at the VERY LATEST, 8-8:15 would be better. Our warm up is at 9:10 am and the meet starts at 10 am. There are many meet jobs for parents...Veronica, Melissa and Joyce will have sign up sheets for these duties very soon. NOTE: I must submit our entries this week. After the entries go in to Concord, no additions can be made - only deletions. Therefore, it is vital that you and your swimmer(s) review your entries this week during practice and let me know if there are any problems or changes needed.

4. Practice changes: Okay, take a deep breath. On Monday (July 16th), we have normal practice times (7-8 for 9 and under, 8-9 for 10 and up). After that, there is a pool party every night at 8 pm for the rest of the season - meaning we have only one hour for practice then on (7-8 pm). The officers and I have worked out a plan for this and I will get final confirmation on Monday. I should have details ready by Monday's practice. The short story is the main work out will be at Pearisburg from 7-8 pm. This will be a work out for experienced swimmers primarily. A second workout will be held at Castle Rock pool (if the pool agrees to this) for younger swimmers and those who still need significant help with strokes to ensure they can swim correctly and not be disqualified at the Association Meet.

This split practice days will be on Wed (7/18), Monday (7/23), Wed (7/25) and Thurs (7/26) only. The time will be announced ASAP. The two Friday practices (7/20 and 7/27) will be all together at the Pearisburg pool from 7-8 pm for EVERYONE (no one is excluded).

I know this is a royal pain. Please be patient - we have no choice at this point. We can't have effective practices with 70+ kids in the same pool at the same time - and we MUST have effective practices before the big meet. I will try to contact those swimmers that I would like to move over to Castle Rock so you will know. Wherever possible, I will try not to split up swimmers within families, etc. We have a plan to prevent this for next year that will work great and be much better for the team - and keeps us in the Pearisburg town pool. Stay tuned.

Thanks, Jim

Welch Meet is ON!!!!

Hello Jets!

The Welch Meet is on for tonight. The weather is clear - it will be great. Please be at the pool at 4:30 to get your events and get settled.

Welch is bringing 61 swimmers! We have 77 swimming tonight. We know our two teams are pretty evenly matched. This is going to be a huge meet. We need LOTS of cheering and yelling.

Please ask your swimmers to drink lots of water or clear liquids before and during the meet (Gatoraide is good). Ask them to eat good carbs like pasta and fruit and veggies - some protein is okay too. Please limit their intake of FAT and SUGAR, and please NO SODA before or during the meet.

I have sent a list of events and entries out by email, so check your inbox if you would like to have a copy of these.

See you this afternoon!

Jim

Monday Practice is ON

Hello,

There is only one hour of practice for EVERYONE from 7-8 pm tonight, Monday.

If you are going to the Tazewell meet, please come to practice and verify your events. It is vital that I have all the entries correct by the end of practice so that I can email our entries to Tazewell tonight.

There are scattered showers in the area, but they are small and should not affect practice. Even so, please come and verify your swimmers events - even if it is storming.

Thanks, Jim

Friday Practice

Hello Team,

Congratulations on a well earned victory over Concord! Concord has excellent swimmers and a fantastic coach. Beating them in their own pool is a great testament to how strong we are as a team. And we will only get stronger as the year progresses. It is going to be an exciting Association Meet this year.

Right now there are several lines of thunderstorms moving toward Giles County. It is not clear whether they will affect practice. Right now, I will say practice is ON.

Please check back here or check your email for an announcement about practice. I will try to post any changes as possible.

Thanks, Jim

Monday

Hello,

There are storms in our area that I think will affect practice today (Monday). I can't say for sure - I left my crystal ball at the office. Because there are several waves of storms, it is entirely likely that we will be affected. If the storms come during the 7 pm hour, it is unclear if we will practice at 8. If the storms come during the 8 pm hour, practice will end there. Indeed, storms come and go, and we may be able to resume after a while - but with several storms coming, the swim team leaders may call off practice at that point.

I plan to post the scheduled events for the Concord meet at practice. Hopefully everyone will get to see it and tell me if there are any problems. If not, most swimmers are swimming the same events they had schedule for Richlands and/or Welch.

At the present time, we will go with the idea that we will have practice - maybe the storms won't come at all? If the situation changes I will update the blog and send out a new message.

Thanks, Jim

Meet Update Tuesday

There are thunderstorms in our area. We will proceed with the meet as scheduled as best we can. If lightning or thunder stops the meet, we will start back up as soon as possible. If the storms are bad and the Richlands team wishes not to continue, we will call off the meet in progress.

Again, we will proceed as best we can. As always, safety is our main concern. If there is lightning we will take all necessary steps to protect the swimmers and the families.

Mock Meet Description

Hello Team,

On Tuesday June 12th, we will hold our annual Mock Meet. Swimmers and parents are asked to arrive at the pool at (CORRECTION: 6:45) 6:45. Swimmers will get a list of their events and parents will help set up the meet and get assignments and training for duties during the meets. The meet will start at 7 pm (or as close to it as possible). This meet should only last a couple hours...depending on getting all the bugs worked out, etc.

Purpose: This is a "mini-meet" designed to give new swimmers and parents a taste of what a swim meet is like, and it gives the team a chance to test all the equipment needed for the upcoming meets.

Families: Probably most important, this meet gives parents a chance to try out the jobs they will be doing during the meets. Some examples include: clerk of course (organizing swimmers in each event), timer (stopwatch duty during each race to get the swimmer's time), starter (announces each event and starts each race), runner (picks up time cards from each lane after each race and other paperwork and delivers them to the scorer's table, also pick up and deliver other items around the pool as needed), scorer (records swimmer's times, places in each event, records points awarded, scores meet), working concessions (selling food items or swim related items), Children's keeper (help small kids know when to go to the clerk of course, help kids move from clerk to starting blocks, helps find kids that don't show up at the blocks at the right time, etc), and stroke and turn judge (judges the swimmers as they swim to ensure they follow the rules for each stroke and race).

If you are new, you will be taught everything you need to know about how to do the jobs you are interested in doing. Most jobs are easy, some require a bit of training, but all are important. Every family is expected to help out in some way during the home meets. Most duty shifts are for half a meet, so it is not really that hard to help out. Again, we will help all new parents (and returning parents) learn what to do and how and when to do it. You will have lots of help and guidance. Equally important - setting up for the meet and taking all the equipment down after the meet requires lots of help from parents. The coach will be very busy coordinating swimmers before the meet and finalizing meet results after the meet. The swim team officers and volunteer coordinators will help everyone know what needs to be done.

The meet coordinators will explain all this in more detail at the Mock Meet and there will be more discussions before the first home meet.

Swimmers: We will have 18 events, or races, at the Mock Meet. (Normal meets have 64 events, give or take.) Event 1 will be boys 6 and under 25 meter freestyle. Event 2 will be girls 6 and under 25 meter freestyle...up to event 12, which is girls 15-18 50 freestyle. The list of events for each swimmer will be posted on a bulletin board (see below). For the mock meet, every swimmer will swim one individual freestyle event, and each swimmer will be "racing" against other swimmers in his/her gender and age group. The last 6 events will be relay races, where groups of four swimmers will form relay teams that will race against each other. These teams will be made up of boys and girls together. Again, 6 and under teams will race against each other and so on up to the oldest swimmers. (In regular meets, most swimmers will swim 1 to 4 events and 1 or 2 relay races depending on age, skill level and swimmer preference).

I will post on a bulletin board the list of swimmers participating in the meet and in which events they are swimming. Swimmers will often write their event numbers on their arms so they won't forget. Then swimmers will listen for the announcement of each event. When they hear their event number called, they will be told to report to the clerk of the course. This will be in the corner nearest the pool steps (by the tennis courts). Once they arrive at the clerk, they will be given a small card with their name on it which will tell them the event number and what the race will be (which they will already know from the bulletin board posting). The card will also tell them what lane they will swim in for the race. If the event is a relay, the card will have the names of all swimmers on the relay team. The clerk will put the kids in order (based on what lane they are in) and the kids will sit in chairs until it is time to go to the blocks. The clerk will tell the kids when to go to the blocks and a Child keeper will lead the kids to the blocks and help them stay in order. Once at the blocks, the timers will get the swimmer's card, and the starter will announce the event number and what the race will be. At that point, the starter will tell the swimmers to get on the blocks (or beside the blocks for those kids that are not comfortable with the blocks yet), take your marks, and a buzzer will sound to start the race. At that point, the swimmer will swim the race. When the swimmer touches the wall, the timers will stop their watches and record the swimmer's time on the card. When all swimmers have finished the race, all the swimmers will be told to exit the pool, and the next event will begin. Swimmers will go to the waiting area to rest and the cards will be taken to the scorer's table for processing. Swimmers then listen out for their next event to be called.

Swimmers are expected to cheer for their team mates as they swim. This can be the most fun part of the meet. It is my hope that we can do some team cheering and yelling before the meet starts. Team spirit is a great morale builder and it helps calm the nerves before the meet. More information about the regular meets will be posted soon, including directions for away meets, events, jobs, etc. Please check back regularly.

LET'S GO, JETS!

Swim Team Consent Forms Are DUE

Hello,

The Radar is clear -- Let's Practice...7-8 pm for 9 and under and 8-9 pm for 10 and up.

If you haven't done so yet, please turn in a swim team consent form as soon as possible. I also need the meet attendance forms. The consent form is most crucial now. If you are unsure about which meets you can attend, please let me know and we can discuss it. This is especially true for new families that don't yet know about how meets work and where the other pools are.

I am building the team roster, and I am using consent forms to do this. I plan the swim meets from the team roster and the meet attendance forms. So, no forms - no swim.

If you don't have a form, you can get one from me or from a swim team officer. We will be glad to help you.

Thanks! Jim

Tuesday June 5th, 2007

Hello All,

There are thunderstoms coming from the west, but it is unclear if they will make it all the way to us and if so, what time they will get here. Right now conditions are okay for swimming. So for now, I will say practice is at the regular time:

9 and under, 7-8 pm
10 and up, 8-9 pm.

PLEASE check back here before you go to the pool to see if there is an update. I will also send an email out if practice is cancelled.

Thanks! Jim

Monday June 4th, 2007

Happy Monday,

We will hold practice at our NEW times tonight:

9 and under, 7-8 pm
10 and up, 8-9 pm

There are widely scattered showers in our area, but right now none look like they will affect practice. I will send an email out and update this blog if this changes.

Please check out the announcement board at the pool each day for important messages. This is a white dry erase board propped up near the corner of the shelter. It has due dates, deadlines and other important messages.

Also, please be sure to ask how you can help setting up or taking down equipment for practice - or helping out with other odd jobs. We will really appreciate the help.

Thanks! Jim

Sunday June 3rd, 2007

Hello Team,

We have made a swim team email list and it is being tested now. We plan to use this in addition to using this blog to give you information about practices and team news.

Please note that our first swim meet is June 19th, when we will host the Richlands team. Dues must be paid before the meet for your child to swim. We will have a pretend meet soon, which we call the Mock Meet, to give the kids a chance to see what a meet is like, and to give parents a chance to learn the jobs they will be doing during the meet.

Please remember this is a volunteer swim club, and so all parents / gaurdians are expected to help out during meets. There are lots of jobs to do, and we really need the help. Likewise, you can help during regular swim practices by helping the swimmers set up or take down equipment, or help out with the many administrative tasks that go on under the shelter during practice time. Just ask any swim team officer or the Coach what you can do. We will be very glad for the help!

Have a great Sunday.

Jim

Tuesday May 29th, 2007

Hello Swim Team,

We are holding practice at our regular times tonight:
6-7 pm for swimmers 9 and under
7-8 pm for swimmers 10 and up

Three notes:

1. There is a lot of equipment to be set up and taken down for swim team practice. Swimmers are encouraged to help with this. Parents are also encouraged to help. Most of the jobs are easy. Please ask the Coach what you can do to help. It will be most appreciated!

2. Kids ask me often if they should have goggles for swimming. The answer is an emphatic YES. This will help protect their eyes from the pool chemicals and improve their sight in the water. Goggles can be purchased from the swim team (see Babette Martin) or from any store where sporting goods are sold.

2. Parents and gaurdians are urged to keep track of the weather during swim practice in case the pool is prematurely closed due to storms. Should the pool close, we ask that parents and gaurdians pick up their child as soon as possible, to keep the kids safe during the storm.

Welcome to the 2007 Swim Season

Hello Swim Team!

We plan to use this blog as a way to communicate swim team information. For example, schedules, rain cancellation, meet information, etc. Look here daily for the latest news. If you have questions, please contact Jim Mahaney at 626-3345 or by email at gilesjets@yahoo.com .

Our first practice is scheduled for Monday May 21st from 6-7 pm for kids 10 and under and from 7-8 for kids 11-18. Whether we swim or not depends on the weather. We will meet and cover some introductory things even if we don't swim.

All swimmers must turn in a completed release form before they will be allowed to participate. Forms will be distributed during the first few practice days.

Our first meet is June 19th at home against Richlands. More information will be posted soon. All swimmers must pay their dues and complete a meet attendance form to be able to swim in the meet. The form will be due before the first meet. Watch for announcements.

Here's to a great year! Jim
